MOTOR VEHICLE TITLES

The State of Alabama is a title state. State law requires an Alabama
resident who
owns a motor vehicle that is 1975 or newer model to obtain a title.
Boats are not titled
in this state.

Motor vehicle titles may be applied for or transferred at either of our
two locations.
You must apply in person or have someone come for you that has a
notarized power
of attorney. You must have a valid driver’s license or an Alabama ID
Card. New
residents have 30 calendar days from date of entry into Alabama to apply
for a title
and tag if the vehicle is correctly registered in their name. If the
vehicle is just
purchased and you are moving here you have 10 calendar days from date of
entry to
apply. If your vehicle is a lease vehicle an original power of attorney
is required from
the lease company. When a vehicle is sold the seller must sign his or
her name as it
appears on the front of the title. (Example: title shows Doe John J must
sign John J.
Doe). Any alterations voids the title and a correction affidavit or a
replacement title
may be required.

If you moved here from OUT OF STATE and your vehicle is NOT FINANCED:

If you moved here from out of state and your vehicle is not financed you
must
turn in the original title. The vehicle must be present at the
courthouse to have a staff
member verify the Vehicle Identification Number. The owner or owners
whose name
the title is in must be present with identification such as driver
license or an Alabama
ID card. If the names are joined by “or” either owner may apply for
title. However if
the names are joined by “and” both owners must apply. A copy of the
registration
from the last state that the vehicle was registered.

If you moved here from OUT OF STATE and your vehicle is FINANCED:

If you moved here from out of state and your vehicle is financed you must
contact the lienholder for a photocopy of the original title. The
vehicle must be present
at the courthouse to have a staff member verify the Vehicle
Identification Number.
The owner or owners whose name the title is in must be present with
identification
such as driver license or an Alabama ID card. If the names are joined by
“or” either
owner may apply for title. However if the names are joined by “and” both
owners must
apply. You must present the current name and address of the lienholder
(finance
company or bank), date of lien, your account number. A copy of the
registration from
the last state that the vehicle was registered.

If you moved here from OUT OF STATE and your vehicle is LEASED:

If you moved here from out of state and your vehicle is leased you will
need the
original title and an original power of attorney from the leasing
company. If the lease is
financed we will only need a photocopy of the title and an original
power of attorney.
The person that the leasing company gives power of attorney to must be
the one who
is present with identification such as driver license or an Alabama ID
Card. The
vehicle must be present at the courthouse to have a staff member verify
the Vehicle
