VEHICLE TRANSFER OR PURCHASE
TAG AND TITLE FOR A VEHICLE.
Vehicles manufactured prior to 1975 are not required by the State of
Alabama to be
titled. However a 1975 and newer must be titled. The following is a
list of
requirements for titling and purchasing a tag for the vehicle you
just
purchased.
1975 and Newer from a Dealership:
If you purchased a new vehicle from an Alabama Dealership you must
bring
in the
following:
1. Alabama Department of Revenue title application (yellow copy) or
original title
or Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin.
2. Bill of Sale or invoice (no buyer’s orders or purchase
agreements).
The bill of
sale must have the sales tax itemized as of how much state, county
and
city sales tax
that was collected as well as the percentage of each.
3. If the dealership brought the vehicle in from another state they
must
give you
an affidavit for ad valorem tax exemption.
4. A copy of the last registration or the affidavit for ad valorem
tax
exemption
filled out stating what kind a tag was on vehicle when traded to the
dealership with tag
number.
5. If you trade in a vehicle bring in the tag receipt to the vehicle
you
traded so
we can transfer to the new vehicle.
6. If you purchased the vehicle from an out of state dealer and they
can not
apply for an Alabama Title you MUST bring the vehicle to the
courthouse
to have a
staff member verify the vehicle identification number.
7. Must have an valid driver’s license or an Alabama ID Card.
8. The owner who is purchasing the vehicle must personally apply for
his
or her
Alabama title and license plates. If unable to come in must give
someone
a notarized
power of attorney to complete the transaction for them. If the new
owner’s names are
joined on the back of the title as “or” then either owner may apply
for
title. If the names
are joined by “and” both owners must be present. If the vehicle is
leased, you must
have a notarized power of attorney from the leasing company. The
person
the leasing
company gave power of attorney must be the person that comes in.
9. Odometer reading if required for any motor vehicle that is less
that
ten (10)
years old.
10. You have 10 calendar days from the date of purchase to transfer
or
purchase a new tag.
1975 and Newer: Casual Sales Tax
IF purchased from an individual with Alabama title, bring the
following:
1. Title signed by the seller on the back of the title. Seller must
sign
the title as
the name is listed on the front. (example: Title shows Doe John J.
must
sign John J.
Doe). If the seller has lost the title he or she must apply for a
replacement title from
the last state that the vehicle was titled.
2. Bill of Sale that is notarized or have two (2) witness that are
not
related to the
buyer or seller.
3. If you trade in a vehicle bring in the tag receipt to the vehicle
you
traded so
we can transfer to the new vehicle.
4. If you purchased the vehicle from an out of state dealer and they
can not
apply for an Alabama Title you MUST bring the vehicle to the

TITLE APPLICATION FEE: $18.00 plus transfer or tag fee, sales tax
and
any past or
present ad valorem taxes that are due.
1974 AND OLDER: DEALER SALE
If you purchased from a dealership in-state or out of state must
bring
the following:
1. Bill of Sale with sales tax itemized.
2. If the dealership brought the vehicle in from another state they
must
give you
an affidavit for ad valorem tax exemption.
3. A copy of the most recent tag registration or the affidavit for
ad
valorem tax
exemption filled out stating what kind a tag was on vehicle when
traded
to the
dealership with tag number.

1974 AND OLDER: CASUAL SALE
If you purchased from a individual in-state or out-of-state must
bring
the following:
1. Bill of Sale that is notarized or have two (2) witness that are
not
related to the
buyer or seller.
2. A copy of the most recent tag registration or the affidavit for
ad
valorem tax
exemption filled out stating what kind a tag was on vehicle when
traded
to the
dealership with tag number.
3. If you trade in a vehicle bring in the tag receipt to the vehicle
you
traded so
we can transfer to the new vehicle.
4. Must have an valid driver’s license or an Alabama ID Card
5. You have 10 calendar days from the date of purchase to transfer
or
purchase
a new tag.
